John Lasseter, chief creative officer of Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios, current Principal Creative Advisor for Walt Disney Imagineering, and director, started his career with Disney as a Skipper on The Jungle Cruise at Disneyland. As part of Disneyland’s 50th anniverary celebration, John returned to be a Skipper for the day on May 5, 2005.
At the D23 Expo in August of 2011, he announced a contest titled “John of the Jungle”. Lasseter was sad to report that he did not have a single picture of himself as a skipper, so he decided to call out to park guests for help, giving them a little incentive to look through those old photo albums.
The first person to submit a verifiable picture of John Lasseter as a Jungle Cruise skipper from 1977-78 will win a trip for four people to the grand opening of Cars Land at Disney California Adventure in summer 2012, as well as a special ride on the Jungle Cruise led by Lasseter himself.
From what I can tell, there hasn’t been a winner yet, but Lasseter may have given up hope, as johnofthejungle.com leads directly to the Disney facebook page, where no mention of the contest can be found.
